Riverside, CA. – The University of Antelope Valley Men's baseball team traveled to Riverside, California to take on La Sierra University for a slate of weekend CalPac conference games. The Pioneers entered today's game aiming to take another step towards a second consecutive CalPac Conference Championship.
Game 1: UAV 2 – LSU 6
The Pioneers came into today's game against the Eagles riding the wave of a great effort against the Lancaster Jethawks (Colorado Rockies minor league affiliate) earlier this week in a midseason exhibition. The great play and effort in the exhibition was something that Pioneers head coach Jacob Garsez saw to be very encouraging as the Pioneers prepared for the second half of CalPac Conference play. A slow start by the Pioneers in the first game of the double header ( the Pioneers didn't score their first run until the sixth inning) resulted in a loss to the Eagles by a score of 6-2. The Pioneers only had seven hits in the game with Breyer Gayle and William Garcia leading the team with two hits apiece. William Garcia and Easton Withers scored the only two runs for the Pioneers.
Game 2: UAV 18 LSU 4
Game two of the day would see the beast awakened in the UAV baseball team as the Pioneers bounced back from the early defeat in extraordinary fashion. The play of the Pioneers and the stat book was night and day in comparison to the earlier display for the Pioneers. UAV led LSU by a score of 3-0 after three innings of play. The fourth and fifth innings of play would see the Pioneers separate themselves from the Eagles completely, scoring a total of nine runs in both innings of play. The running of the Pioneers continued through the final three innings as UAV bounced back in a major way to defeat La Sierra by a final score of 18-4. The Pioneers had seventeen hits as a team with William Garcia (5 hits, 4 runs scored) and Adam Maciel ( 4 hits, 4 runs scored) led the way. Mikey Pereznegron, Luke Smith, Easton Withers and Cory McKendrick each stole a base for the Pioneers in the win. Gilberto Arroyo pitched six innings for the Pioneers.
The Pioneers will return to action against La Sierra University on Sunday April 9th. The game starts at 11:00am PST.
