Santa Barbara, CA – The University of Antelope Valley volleyball team traveled to Santa Barbara, California yesterday to take on the Westmont College Warriors, ranked #7 in the pre-season NAIA National Poll.
UAV loses to Westmont College 3-0 (32-30, 27-25, 25-12)
Yesterday's match against the Warriors of Westmont College would provide the Pioneers the opportunity to match up against one of the premier volleyball programs in the country. The Pioneers have been road warriors to begin the season, having played all of their matches away from the Pioneer Event Center. The first two sets would be closely contested but UAV would lose each set by two points (32-30, 27-25). The final set would see UAV fall to Westmont College 25-12. Despite the loss, several Pioneers made key contributions in today's match. Shea O'Brien led the Pioneers with 9 kills, 52 total attacks and 15 digs. Bria Buchanan had 22 total attacks and 6 kills while Mercedes Dangerfield contributed 17 total attacks and 5 kills. Kaycee Shaffer had 23 assists for the Pioneers and Camryn Buell had 1 service ace in the match. Head coach Nick Ferry was very encouraged with the effort and performance of his team.
"Going point to point with the #7 team in the country is an extremely positive product for this team. They have worked insanely hard in the gym every day with full focus. Westmont is coming off wins over the #2, #9, and #16 nationally ranked teams. If that doesn't give this squad unwavering belief, I don't know what will.
Although tough to lose any match, we were happy to see the whole team step up tonight."
The Pioneers travel to Phoenix, Arizona to take on Ottawa University in the Arizona Christian Tournament September 1 at 1:00pm. The Pioneers will play a second match on the same day at 7:00pm against host Arizona Christian.
